{"id":110891,"date":"2022-05-01T18:42:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-01T22:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=110891"},"modified":"2022-05-02T09:08:10","modified_gmt":"2022-05-02T13:08:10","slug":"and-then-my-4th-grade-teacher-said","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=110891","title":{"rendered":"And then my 4th Grade teacher said&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When you\u2019re in the fourth grade even the kids in the seventh grade are old.&nbsp; Students in the high school are old enough to be full-on adults.&nbsp; But it is safe to say that Miss Gladys Caulkins, my fourth grade teacher, would be considered old \u2013 even to my parents (my parents were not old\u2026 they were my parents, and for me, without perception of age).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who knows? Miss Caulkins could have been considered old before WWII!\u00a0 Carefully combed white hair, wire rimmed glasses, a thin cardigan over a lace collared blouse, dark mid-calf skirt and sensible stacked heel shoes. Could she be termed a spinster? Someone who only experienced a brief flicker of that\u00a0<em>love<\/em>\u00a0connection that somehow was sadly extinguished, never to be rekindled?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is undeniable.&nbsp; Miss Caulkins had an abiding love for birds.&nbsp; Something she picked up in college?&nbsp;&nbsp; Maybe traced back to her childhood?&nbsp; Regardless, it became her mission to extend our learning beyond the required \u201cThree R\u2019s\u201d and to imbue in us a love for our feathered friends.&nbsp; Birds were her love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our class went on bird walks.&nbsp; Who doesn\u2019t want to get out of a classroom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But then there was the half year project to draw a bird in pastel.\u00a0 This activity was coordinated with the art teacher who came to our room to help in this endeavor.\u00a0 But it was Miss Caulkins who was there as critical overseer to correct our choice of feather color, posture of the bird, and selection of background (my bald eagle was on a nest, perched on a cliff ledge overlooking an expanse of sea).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her attention to detail was with the foreknowledge that our poster-sized pastels would be on display in Cushing Auditorium for the upper classes to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miss Caulkins invested so much in this bird enterprise\u2026 and perhaps feeling the accumulating stress of pushing a group of 4<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;graders to artistic heights that she emerged from behind her Edwardian rectitude when I asked, \u201cMiss Caulkins, maybe I can put a wig on my bald eagle?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To which the ever proper, lace collared Miss Caulkins returned, \u201cJimmy Winston, this world doesn\u2019t need another smart ass.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you\u2019re in the fourth grade even the kids in the seventh grade are old.&nbsp; Students in the high school are old enough to be full-on adults.&nbsp; But it is safe to say that Miss Gladys Caulkins, my fourth grade &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=110891\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-110891","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-childhood"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/110891","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=110891"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/110891\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":110904,"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/110891\/revisions\/110904"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=110891"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=110891"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=110891"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
