{"id":111082,"date":"2023-02-07T15:42:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T20:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=111082"},"modified":"2023-02-09T08:00:45","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T13:00:45","slug":"birthday-dinner-california-grill-february-2-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=111082","title":{"rendered":"Birthday Dinner @ California Grill, February 2, 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Seven years ago I celebrated my birthday at the California Grill in Walt Disney World.&nbsp; Little did I realize then that it would become a tradition that I have enjoyed every year since (save the pandemic year).&nbsp; I love the location on the top floor of the Contemporary Resort.&nbsp; And a table by the window affords a splendid view of the fireworks display above Cinderella\u2019s Castle in the Magic Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly, Ray the bartender knows how to assemble a superb Tanqueray Martini, and one of the few practitioners of the mixing arts that I can rely on to produce a Martini nearly as good as one of my own making\u2014<em>hardly faint praise.<\/em> The special menu and the general buzz in the room justly complete a worthy experience. <em>But\u2026<\/em> What happens if Ray is not there? <em>And<\/em>, what happens if Tanqueray is no longer a gin option! To quote the great W.C. Fields, <em>\u201cOh death, where is thy sting?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True.&nbsp;On Feb 2, 2023 Ray was off premises tending to knee replacement rehab, and astoundingly, Disney has decided to shed Tanqueray from their gin selection.&nbsp;Adapt we must.&nbsp;Plan B: Bombay Sapphire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Birthday-Martini-2023-cropped.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Birthday-Martini-2023-cropped.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111148\" width=\"669\" height=\"792\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The menu was <em>prix fixe<\/em> for three courses @89 fishnagels.&nbsp;<em>But<\/em> for an additional 39 greenbacks there would be three wines to pair with each course, OR for 69 byzantiums you could enjoy a <em>deluxe <\/em>pairing of wines to each course.&nbsp;After scanning the selections recommended, I was all in for the deluxe indulgence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cali Grill\u2019s claim to fame is its extensive California\/West Coast wine list.&nbsp;To give you an idea: for the Pumpkin and Squash Bisque there was Kistler \u2018Les Nosti\u00e8res\u2019 Chardonnay.&nbsp;The entr\u00e9e of Florida Black Grouper was paired with Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve from Willamette, Oregon.&nbsp; For the Grand Marnier Cr\u00e8me Br\u00fbl\u00e9e dessert course: Far Niente\u2019s excellent Dolce \u2018Late Harvest.\u2019 On to&nbsp;dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martini consumed, it was time for my first course: Braised Beef Short Rib Wontons (doenjang miso-cola-onion sauce, radish, crispy garlic-chili oil, pickled lotus root) with <strong>BV Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour \u201918. <\/strong>The wontons were tender, richly flavored and the sauce possessed a healthy \u201ckick\u201d that made the dish sing.&nbsp;The wine was sinfully beautiful. The <em>Wine Advocate<\/em> review, nails it: \u201cDeep garnet-purple in color, it prances out of the glass with flamboyant scents of blackberry preserves, wild blueberries and cr\u00e8me de cassis, followed by hints of cigar box, Chinese five-spice and pencil shavings with a waft of menthol.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\" style=\"padding-right: 0.7em\"><a href=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/wontons.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/wontons.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111101\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\" style=\"padding-left: 0.7em\"><a href=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Sip-of-Champagne.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bouquet.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111102\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>My main course was Fire-Roasted Venison (fondant sweet potatoes, parsnip pur\u00e9e, winter vegetables, sour cranberry).&nbsp;The loin chop of venison was mind-blowingly great.&nbsp;Served perfectly at medium rare.&nbsp; Tender, could be cut with a plastic knife.&nbsp;The venison melted in your mouth.&nbsp;The wine served was <strong>Duckhorn Merlot Three Palms Vyd \u201919.&nbsp;<\/strong>Stupendous pairing.&nbsp;Fragrant, supple textured on palate and flavors that danced in concert with the flavors and textures of the venison (although my \u201cold world\u201d preferences would have enjoyed a Brunello or a C\u00f4te de Nuits Burgundy here, too!).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/venison.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/venison.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111129\" width=\"669\" height=\"892\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NY Cheesecake and Cr\u00e8me Br\u00fbl\u00e9e are my dessert <em>Achilles\u2019 Heel<\/em>, yet I chose perhaps the least interesting of the dessert options on the menu: Chef\u2019s Selection of California Cheeses (featuring three unique cheeses and house-made accompaniments).&nbsp;Honestly, if the pairing had been Twinkies and <strong>Ruinart Blanc de Blancs<\/strong>, that also would have been the call.&nbsp;Make no mistake, the cheeses were good\u2026 but when I did wine dinners years ago, the cheese course is where I placed the best red wine to be tasted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\"><em>After <\/em>the cheese course a dessert course would be paired with a \u201ctrue\u201d dessert wine\u2014a Sauternes, a&nbsp;Late Harvest Riesling, or the Dolce that was offered on the menu.&nbsp;But Ruinart?&nbsp;I would have been happy to eschew my Bombay Martini, <em>and<\/em> the two great reds that I enjoyed, to have that Blanc de Blancs from beginning to end.&nbsp;Ruinart is to Blanc de Blancs what Billecart-Salmon is to Brut Ros\u00e9.&nbsp;Each are reference point Champagnes.&nbsp;And great Champagne is the \u201cliquid string of pearls\u201d of wine: it goes with everything!<\/p><p>The dinner w\/wine: perfect &amp; off-the charts fun. Service, the best (Walter, our server, is worth asking for should you dine there).<\/p><p>The wines are currently available. Deep garnet-purple in color, it prances out of the glass with flamboyant scents of blackberry preserves, wild blueberries and cr\u00e8me de cassis, followed by hints of cigar box, Chinese five-spice and pencil shavings with a waft of menthol. Medium- to full-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of firm grainy tannins and seamless freshness supporting the muscular black fruit, finishing long and earthy. 96+pts <em>Wine Advocate<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\" style=\"padding-left: 1.5em\"><a href=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bv2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bv2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111164\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><strong>Duckhorn Merlot Three Palms Vyd \u201919 (Napa, CA) <\/strong> A\u00a0blend of 92% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Malbec, 1% Cabernet Franc. I like the savory nose here, with notes of coffee, spiced plum, overturned earth and bark. Full-bodied with fine, silky tannins. Expressive, but focused, with really clean and clear dark fruit blending nicely with ground spice and grilled herbs. Totally delicious. This will age very nicely. 95pts James Suckling<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\" style=\"padding-left: 1.5em\"><a href=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/duckhorn.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/duckhorn.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111165\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><strong>Ruinart Blanc de Blancs (Champagne, France) <\/strong>100% Chardonnay. A\u00a0fruity yet firm blanc de blancs with some brioche, cooked-apple and pear aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and flavorful. Fruity finish. Always a good bottle.
