{"id":255,"date":"2007-02-21T09:14:27","date_gmt":"2007-02-21T13:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.summerofjim.com\/2007\/02\/21\/annie-with-the-pretty-smile\/"},"modified":"2007-02-21T09:14:27","modified_gmt":"2007-02-21T13:14:27","slug":"annie-with-the-pretty-smile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=255","title":{"rendered":"Annie With the Pretty Smile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I turned the corner, and there she was&#8230; sitting in a leaf pile at the end of her drive on McKinley Ave. <\/p>\n<p>Mollie and I were out for some exercise&#8230; Mollie being our Keeshond.\u00a0 Sandy had given strict instructions to Mollie to take me for a walk&#8230; &#8220;keep him out for 30 minutes Mollie and then bring him back home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Can I pee on any tree of my choosing?&#8221; I ask.\u00a0 I had a Grandmother, Mother, Sister, Wife &#038; 2 Daughters&#8230; oh yes, and let&#8217;s not forget Mollie.\u00a0 And the way I figure it, the only advantage I have on the women is that I can pee anywhere I want.<\/p>\n<p>Well&#8230; Mollie pretty much goes where she wants to, too.\u00a0 I think that&#8217;s why we like taking walks together.<\/p>\n<p>Mollie saw her sitting in the leaf pile, too.\u00a0 And she immediately began to wag her tail in excitement&#8230; &#8220;oh! someone my size! at ground level&#8221;&#8230; is probably what Mollie had on her mind.\u00a0 And she pulled me over for a sniff, a wag and maybe a lick and a hop &#038; a spin or two.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen Annie in the neighborhood before; but this was going to be our first <em>formal <\/em>meeting.<\/p>\n<p>She was wearing a navy fleece fuzzy vest over a lilac coloured sweater, she had a deep hunter green beret that covered most of her shoulder length auburn hair.<\/p>\n<p>When we approached, she looked up and her dark eyes lit&#8230; she smiled, there was a slight gap in her two front teeth&#8230; (when she gets older that slight gap will drive guys nuts.)<\/p>\n<p>Mollie sees the smile and immediately launches into a major wag&#8230; not merely the tail; but the whole hind quarter swings into action, a quick spin in the leaves, a hop and a quick bark.\u00a0 Annie laughs, and then Mollie gives her cheek a lick, and another.<\/p>\n<p>Dogs love tears.\u00a0 Not the reason for the tears&#8230; just the tears themselves.\u00a0 I suspect that Annie had just had a bit of cry.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t cold enough for her eyes to simply tear.\u00a0 No, Mollie was drawn to a tear of sadness and hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Now Annie is giggling under Mollie&#8217;s affectionate assault.\u00a0 I try to settle\u00a0my Keeshond\u00a0down; but she spins and hops&#8230; happy for the leaves and\u00a0new friend.\u00a0 A couple more barks to emphasize\u00a0her general good spirit&#8230; Annie tumbles back into the leaf pile, and\u00a0Mollie pursues with more kisses,\u00a0which of course brings on more giggles.<\/p>\n<p>Mollie spins and hops in the pile, barks and throws a couple of back kicks in for good measure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Settle down Martha! I don&#8217;t think anyone is going to appreciate your efforts to scatter the pile of leaves into the street!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Martha?\u00a0 Is that her name?&#8221; Annie asks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well&#8230; we call her Mollie; but when she misbehaves then it&#8217;s Miss Martha.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My name is Annie; and when I misbehave it&#8217;s &#8216;Miss Anne of Green Gables&#8217;.\u00a0 You have such a great dog!\u00a0 And look!\u00a0 It looks like she is wearing glasses!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why, yes&#8230; her markings make it look she&#8217;s wearing specs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What kind of dog is she?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A Keeshond.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a Dutch breed.\u00a0 They were used as companion dogs on canal barges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She certainly has a fluffy coat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She loves the cold weather&#8230; and she loves to play in the snow.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you Lady Grey?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lady Grey?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When she\u00a0is acting like a &#8216;Princess&#8217; I like to call her The\u00a0Lady Grey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This brought out a new smile from Annie who called Mollie to her.\u00a0 &#8220;She looks like a grey bear!
