{"id":282,"date":"2007-07-16T11:03:56","date_gmt":"2007-07-16T15:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.summerofjim.com\/2007\/07\/16\/why-talking-to-mikey-bordeaux-on-a-slow-day-is-a-bad-idea-reason-6\/"},"modified":"2007-07-16T11:03:56","modified_gmt":"2007-07-16T15:03:56","slug":"why-talking-to-mikey-bordeaux-on-a-slow-day-is-a-bad-idea-reason-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=282","title":{"rendered":"Why talking to Mikey Bordeaux on a slow day is a bad idea, reason #6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;What do you know about the Mayans?&#8221;\u00a0 The question was put to me by my colleague, Mikey Bordeaux&#8230; well, his real name is Mike Wofsey; but I have another friend of that name who lives on the other side of the Hudson, and it will potentially confuse matters in\u00a0future tales to use Mr. Bordeaux&#8217;s given name. <\/p>\n<p>Fridays are a <em>slow <\/em>day at Grapes&#8230; the &#8220;sell team&#8221; stands down for the day&#8230; and by Noon Ash and Andre have departed leaving just Mikey and me to guard the nest.\u00a0 And a question like &#8220;what do you know about the Mayans?&#8221; can appear innocent to an unsuspecting observer.\u00a0 But <em>I<\/em> know better.\u00a0 This question is classified as a &#8220;tip of the iceberg&#8221; type question.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Mayans?\u00a0 Well&#8230; let&#8217;s see&#8230; the word Mayan means <em>from the other side of the <\/em><em>Hudson<\/em><em>&#8230;<\/em> and for a long time it was believed that the Mayans were one of the lost Tribes of Israel.\u00a0 Then it was discovered that they were into human sacrifice&#8230; which was a definite no-no to the Hebrews.\u00a0 The Ancient Hebrews were into sacrificing lambs for the Veal Chop Festival&#8230; which was later renamed Passover because Cecil B. DeMille couldn&#8217;t make Charlton Heston do a sex scene with a sheep.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, the Mayans.\u00a0 And the Mayan Calendar, dude.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Uh, oh.\u00a0 He was not deterred by my first evasive maneuver.<\/p>\n<p>Mikey continued, &#8220;The Calendar has been around forever and it has never been modified&#8230; not like our Julian Calendar that had to be changed by Pope Gregory to account for a fistful of lost days.\u00a0 The Ancient Mayan Calendar has been accurate <em>to the day<\/em> since day one!\u00a0 <em>BUT<\/em>&#8230; and here&#8217;s the <em>best part<\/em>&#8230; the Calendar <u>ends<\/u> on December 21, 2012!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the <em>best<\/em> part?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jimbo, don&#8217;t you know about the Prophecy?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Prophecy?\u00a0 The <em>Prophecy<\/em>?\u00a0 You don&#8217;t know who you are dealing with!\u00a0 You are speaking to a descendant of the <em>Kohanim<\/em>, the Tribe of Priests that ruled the Temple.\u00a0 This was in the day before we invented the title &#8220;Rabbi&#8221;, which didn&#8217;t come into use &#8217;til we were in Babylonian Exile&#8230; AND, then, <em>when we weren&#8217;t looking<\/em>, the Catholics ran in and stole the title <em>Priest <\/em>from us!\u00a0 In 1963 delegates from the Central Conference of Rabbis met with emissaries from the Holy See to propose a straight up swap of titles&#8230; we get back <em>Priest <\/em>and we give them Rabbi&#8230; Priests could now marry, Rabbis would have to remain celibate; but could eat pork fried rice&#8230; It would throw the anti-Semites of the world into chaos!\u00a0 The deal collapsed when the Vatican insisted that Sandy Koufax had to convert.&#8221;\u00a0 {I could see that my second evasion has also failed}&#8230; &#8220;Prophecy?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dude, don&#8217;t you see it?\u00a0 The Mayan Calendar has been out there for 5000 years, and then stops!\u00a0 Stops!\u00a0 December 21, 2012!\u00a0 The Winter Solstice, dude!\u00a0 And this is the Winter Solstice to end all Winter Solstices!\u00a0 Literally, the end!\u00a0 A perfect alignment of planets&#8230; and the Mayans knew this from the get-go!!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A perfect alignment?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sure!\u00a0 Intense exertions on the Earth&#8217;s crust brought on by the unique planetary positions &#8212; in turn producing a shift in plate tectonics, which in turn will affect our orbit and atmosphere!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uh, huh.\u00a0 This sounds like some bullshit Bush&#8217;s people cooked up to cover global warming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No Jimbo&#8230; for real.\u00a0 Check out this website.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a countdown!!
