What follows below appeared in the Novermber 24 issue of the New Yorker<\/span><\/em> in their Shouts & Murmurs column.\u00a0 The writer is Jack Handey… my first reading of his work.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Well… I am tipping my hat to him.\u00a0 The economy is real tough and I am trying to think of ways to augument my earnings… the conventional ways are falling short.\u00a0 Handey’s plan I think has real potential.\u00a0 I am going to recruit a team of worthy confederates.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

After careful consideration… taking into account loyalty and motivation, I have decided to put Gary Moss in Leon’s<\/span><\/em> role.\u00a0 He narrowly beat out Jonathan Mix.\u00a0 Jonathan, you will get the next gig.\u00a0 Jock, you’re third.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Others wanting to join the team, please send your resume… oh, and one hundred dollars American… <\/span><\/em>and I promise to give your application my immediate attention!<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>***********************<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>The plan isn\u2019t foolproof. For it to work, certain things must happen:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The door to the vault must have accidentally been left open by the cleaning woman.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The guard must bend over to tie his shoes and somehow he gets all the shoelaces tied together. He can\u2019t get them apart, so he takes out his gun and shoots all his bullets at the knot. But he misses. Then he just lies down on the floor and goes to sleep.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>Most of the customers in the bank must happen to be wearing Nixon masks, so when we come in wearing our Nixon masks it doesn\u2019t alarm anyone.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>There must be an empty parking space right out in front. If it has a meter, there must be time left on it, because our outfits don\u2019t have pockets for change.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The monkeys must grab the bags of money and not just shriek and go running all over the place, like they did in the practice run.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The security cameras must be the early, old-timey kind that don\u2019t actually take pictures.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>When the big clock in the lobby strikes two, everyone must stop and stare at it for at least ten minutes.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The bank alarm must have mistakenly been set to \u201cQuiet.\u201d Or \u201cEbb tide.\u201d<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The gold bars must be made out of a lighter kind of gold that\u2019s just as valuable but easier to carry.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>If somebody runs out of the bank and yells, \u201cHelp! The bank is being robbed!,\u201d he must be a neighborhood crazy person who people just laugh at.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>If the police come, they don\u2019t notice that the historical mural on the wall is actually us, holding still.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The bank\u2019s lost-and-found department must have a gun that fires a suction cup with a wire attached to it. Also a chainsaw and a hang glider.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>When we spray the lobby with knockout gas, for some reason the gas doesn\u2019t work on us.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>After the suction cup is stuck to the ceiling, it must hold long enough for Leon to pull himself up the wire while carrying the bags of money, the gold bars, and the hang glider. When he reaches the ceiling, he must be able to cut through it with the chainsaw and climb out.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>Any fingerprints we leave must be erased by the monkeys.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>Once on the roof, Leon must be able to hold on to the hang glider with one hand and the money and the gold bars with the other and launch himself off the roof. Then glide the twenty miles to the rendezvous point.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>When we exit the bank, there must be a parade going by, so our getaway car, which is decorated to look like a float, can blend right in.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>During the parade, our car must not win a prize for best float, because then we\u2019ll have to have our picture taken with the award.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>At the rendezvous point, there must be an empty parking space with a meter that takes hundred-dollar bills.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2014<\/span>The robbery is blamed on the monkeys.<\/span> <\/p>\n
