{"id":355,"date":"2009-08-22T15:10:40","date_gmt":"2009-08-22T19:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.summerofjim.com\/2009\/08\/22\/box-of-chocklits\/"},"modified":"2025-07-06T10:09:36","modified_gmt":"2025-07-06T14:09:36","slug":"box-of-chocklits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=355","title":{"rendered":"Box of Chocklits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I will tell you what this is not&#8230; it is not a collection of my fifteen favorite songs (although I <em>did<\/em> compile a list of thirty-three favorite tunes four years ago, and three of those songs are included herein).\u00a0 It is also not the ultimate play-list based on a unifying theme&#8230; all blues, or British invasion, or music from the 60s, or famous songs covered by other artists.\u00a0 This is not even a list that I cooked up at Ash Creek\u00a0during an evening of\u00a0reviewing the finer attributes of Kentucky sippin&#8217; whisky.<\/p>\n<p>No. Not any of that.<\/p>\n<p>I have\u00a0put together\u00a0some music that I have accumulated over the years.\u00a0 Fifteen tunes knit together, that I think have a good flow with only a couple of &#8220;seams&#8221; showing&#8230; the idea being that the disc could be listened to from beginning to end without skipping a track.\u00a0 Well&#8230; that&#8217;s the idea of a play-list, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>A brief word about the selected titles and their lyrics as a basis for inclusion in this play-list.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t over analyze it.\u00a0 You can read into it what you will.\u00a0 It&#8217;s sorta like reading a horoscope &#8212; you can always find <em>something<\/em> to support a thesis or supposition.\u00a0 But I hate to disappoint you&#8230; this is not my autobiography thru music.<\/p>\n<p>These songs are here simply because I dig them.\u00a0 A little bit of this and a little bit of that.\u00a0 It reminds of something my Mother\u00a0said years ago&#8230; &#8220;Life is like a box of chocklits&#8230; ya never know what yer gonna git.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well&#8230; maybe it was some other person&#8217;s\u00a0Mother who said it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>On The Turning Away<\/u><\/strong> PINK FLOYD<br \/>\nPink Floyd is one of those bands that attracts a cult following.\u00a0 Count Zachary in that number of <em>devotees<\/em>.\u00a0 He was the one who pointed me to this track.\u00a0 It reminds me of some of the Moody Blues&#8217; orchestral numbers from <em>Days of Future Passed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>In Your Eyes<\/u><\/strong> PETER GABRIEL<br \/>\nI love the pace of this tune.\u00a0 And Gabriel has that &#8220;throaty&#8221; vocal that I enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Walking In <\/u><\/strong><strong><u>Memphis<\/u><\/strong> MARC COHEN<br \/>\nAnother <em>throaty <\/em>vocalist.\u00a0 I have purposely avoided googling this song&#8217;s lyrics.\u00a0 Even after careful repeated listenings, I can&#8217;t understand the line about\u00a0the manner\u00a0of walking in Memphis, and its effect on his feet.\u00a0 I love the line&#8230; &#8220;Are you a Christian?\u00a0 Yeah, I am tonight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>This Is Us<\/u><\/strong> MARK KNOPFLER<br \/>\nIn my book Knopfler is the perfect musician.\u00a0 Great song writer.\u00a0 Incredible guitar.\u00a0 Incredible. Superb vocal, and on this track he is joined by a terrific Emmy Lou Harris.\u00a0 Listen a second time.\u00a0 Great duet blending two different vocal textures.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Ah Mary<\/u><\/strong> GRACE POTTER<br \/>\nOn this track Grace Potter fronts for The Nocturnals.\u00a0 I have no clue where I came upon this song.\u00a0 I just like it.\u00a0 &#8220;She&#8217;ll make you cookies, then she&#8217;ll burn your town.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Bette Davis Eyes<\/u><\/strong> KIM CARNES<br \/>\nLove the song; but I don&#8217;t know about Bette Davis&#8217; eyes being so hot.\u00a0 What was hot about Bette Davis was her slamming three martinis in <em>All About Eve<\/em> and delivering the line, &#8220;fasten your seatbelts, it&#8217;s going to be a bumpy night.&#8221; Meanwhile, Carnes&#8217; raspy voice is perfect on this track.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Where To Now <\/u><\/strong><strong><u>St.<\/u><\/strong><strong><u> Peter?<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0ANN WILSON<br \/>\nAnn Wilson is one half of the sister act Heart.\u00a0 This is a great cover for an Elton John\/Bernie Taupin\u00a0song&#8230; and she is supported on this track by Elton John&#8217;s backing vocal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Summer Of &#8217;69<\/u><\/strong> BRYAN ADAMS<br \/>\nAn unplugged version.\u00a0 OK, summer of &#8217;69&#8230; Woodstock, the Astronauts landed on the moon, I hosteled thru Europe.\u00a0 And yes, it was a special time, and this is a special song. Great line, &#8221; I guess nothing can last forever&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Further On (Up The Road)<\/u><\/strong> BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN<br \/>\nThis is from a live concert recorded in Dublin.\u00a0 There are at least two other featured vocalists who lend support on the track.\u00a0 I have no idea who they are.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Enough Of The Night<\/u><\/strong> JACKSON BROWNE<br \/>\nThe acoustic version done live.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>If Not For You<\/u><\/strong> BOB DYLAN<br \/>\nJust love the tune. Love the tune. And for a change, love Dylan singing one of his own songs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Here Comes The Sun<\/u><\/strong> JOE BROWN<br \/>\nThis is my favorite Beatles tune.\u00a0 I draw from its optimism.
