I will tell you what this is not… it is not a collection of my fifteen favorite songs (although I did<\/em> compile a list of thirty-three favorite tunes four years ago, and three of those songs are included herein).\u00a0 It is also not the ultimate play-list based on a unifying theme… all blues, or British invasion, or music from the 60s, or famous songs covered by other artists.\u00a0 This is not even a list that I cooked up at Ash Creek\u00a0during an evening of\u00a0reviewing the finer attributes of Kentucky sippin’ whisky.<\/p>\n

No. Not any of that.<\/p>\n

I have\u00a0put together\u00a0some music that I have accumulated over the years.\u00a0 Fifteen tunes knit together, that I think have a good flow with only a couple of “seams” showing… the idea being that the disc could be listened to from beginning to end without skipping a track.\u00a0 Well… that’s the idea of a play-list, isn’t it?<\/p>\n

A brief word about the selected titles and their lyrics as a basis for inclusion in this play-list.\u00a0 Don’t over analyze it.\u00a0 You can read into it what you will.\u00a0 It’s sorta like reading a horoscope — you can always find something<\/em> to support a thesis or supposition.\u00a0 But I hate to disappoint you… this is not my autobiography thru music.<\/p>\n

These songs are here simply because I dig them.\u00a0 A little bit of this and a little bit of that.\u00a0 It reminds of something my Mother\u00a0said years ago… “Life is like a box of chocklits… ya never know what yer gonna git.”<\/p>\n

Well… maybe it was some other person’s\u00a0Mother who said it.<\/p>\n

On The Turning Away<\/u><\/strong> PINK FLOYD
\nPink Floyd is one of those bands that attracts a cult following.\u00a0 Count Zachary in that number of devotees<\/em>.\u00a0 He was the one who pointed me to this track.\u00a0 It reminds me of some of the Moody Blues’ orchestral numbers from Days of Future Passed.<\/em><\/p>\n

In Your Eyes<\/u><\/strong> PETER GABRIEL
\nI love the pace of this tune.\u00a0 And Gabriel has that “throaty” vocal that I enjoy.<\/p>\n

Walking In <\/u><\/strong>Memphis<\/u><\/strong> MARC COHEN
\nAnother throaty <\/em>vocalist.\u00a0 I have purposely avoided googling this song’s lyrics.\u00a0 Even after careful repeated listenings, I can’t understand the line about\u00a0the manner\u00a0of walking in Memphis, and its effect on his feet.\u00a0 I love the line… “Are you a Christian?\u00a0 Yeah, I am tonight.”<\/p>\n

This Is Us<\/u><\/strong> MARK KNOPFLER
\nIn my book Knopfler is the perfect musician.\u00a0 Great song writer.\u00a0 Incredible guitar.\u00a0 Incredible. Superb vocal, and on this track he is joined by a terrific Emmy Lou Harris.\u00a0 Listen a second time.\u00a0 Great duet blending two different vocal textures.<\/p>\n

Ah Mary<\/u><\/strong> GRACE POTTER
\nOn this track Grace Potter fronts for The Nocturnals.\u00a0 I have no clue where I came upon this song.\u00a0 I just like it.\u00a0 “She’ll make you cookies, then she’ll burn your town.”<\/p>\n

Bette Davis Eyes<\/u><\/strong> KIM CARNES
\nLove the song; but I don’t know about Bette Davis’ eyes being so hot.\u00a0 What was hot about Bette Davis was her slamming three martinis in All About Eve<\/em> and delivering the line, “fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” Meanwhile, Carnes’ raspy voice is perfect on this track.<\/p>\n

Where To Now <\/u><\/strong>St.<\/u><\/strong> Peter?<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0ANN WILSON
\nAnn Wilson is one half of the sister act Heart.\u00a0 This is a great cover for an Elton John\/Bernie Taupin\u00a0song… and she is supported on this track by Elton John’s backing vocal.<\/p>\n

Summer Of ’69<\/u><\/strong> BRYAN ADAMS
\nAn unplugged version.\u00a0 OK, summer of ’69… Woodstock, the Astronauts landed on the moon, I hosteled thru Europe.\u00a0 And yes, it was a special time, and this is a special song. Great line, ” I guess nothing can last forever…”<\/p>\n

Further On (Up The Road)<\/u><\/strong> BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
\nThis is from a live concert recorded in Dublin.\u00a0 There are at least two other featured vocalists who lend support on the track.\u00a0 I have no idea who they are.<\/p>\n

Enough Of The Night<\/u><\/strong> JACKSON BROWNE
\nThe acoustic version done live.<\/p>\n

If Not For You<\/u><\/strong> BOB DYLAN
\nJust love the tune. Love the tune. And for a change, love Dylan singing one of his own songs.<\/p>\n

Here Comes The Sun<\/u><\/strong> JOE BROWN
\nThis is my favorite Beatles tune.\u00a0 I draw from its optimism. This track comes from a concert honoring George Harrison.\u00a0 As much as I like this track, I would have used the original Beatles’\u00a0Abbey’s Road <\/em>version if it were available.<\/p>\n

Sunday Girl<\/u><\/strong> BLONDIE
\nDebbie Harry covers their hit in French.\u00a0I like it in English, I love it in French.<\/p>\n

Touch Of Grey<\/u><\/strong> THE GRATEFUL DEAD
\nThe only song released by this historic band as a single.\u00a0 Sweet vocal and an even sweeter guitar from the late and great <\/em>Jerry Garcia.<\/p>\n

Try To Remember<\/u><\/strong> JERRY ORBACH
\nFrom the longest running show in New York, The Fantastiks. <\/em>OK, it doesn’t really fit here.\u00a0 But it reflects a sentiment that strikes a resonant chord for me.\u00a0 How’s this for a line… “without a hurt the heart is hollow.”<\/p>\n
