{"id":456,"date":"2011-01-17T08:29:56","date_gmt":"2011-01-17T12:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.summerofjim.com\/?p=456"},"modified":"2011-05-04T19:06:22","modified_gmt":"2011-05-04T23:06:22","slug":"proud-of-you-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/summerofjim.com\/?p=456","title":{"rendered":"Proud of You All"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it&#8217;s like this&#8230; I got to thinking about Mommie Soph.\u00a0 That my memories were tweaked by sharing a standing rib-roast with Alan, Lynn, Andy, Sandy, Shaina and John on Christmas Eve may seem a bit out of place.\u00a0 Christmas Eve?\u00a0 Mommie Soph?<\/p>\n<p>To me the Christmas connection\u00a0was simply\u00a0due to a\u00a0part of her remarkable make-up.\u00a0 I am sure that she did not <em>encourage <\/em>Mom and Dad to accept the &#8220;material&#8221; part of Christmas into our household.\u00a0 But she didn&#8217;t stand in its way.\u00a0 And\u00a0she seemed perfectly good at moving to the rhythms of the Holiday Season.\u00a0 <em>And<\/em> she certainly took to Dad&#8217;s <em>commission<\/em> to take charge of the Chipp tailor&#8217;s Christmas Eve party on Eld St. She would provision out the party with pizzas from Pepe&#8217;s, deli from M &amp; T and pastries from Lucibello&#8217;s.\u00a0 A case of Scotch whisky would also be on hand (an offering of the Season for Toplitsky the head of the Tailor&#8217;s Union in New Haven).\u00a0 We benefited, too!\u00a0 All the leftovers found there way to 25 Alston Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t stop there.\u00a0 Mommie Soph looked at Santa Claus (or as she would say, &#8220;Sendy Close&#8221;) as an American folk hero.\u00a0 What could be so bad?\u00a0 And on Christmas morning when I opened my gifts, she was so happy for my joy.\u00a0 I saw it in her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>So you see&#8230; I have been thinking about her.<\/p>\n<p>And I just want to say how proud I am of her descendants&#8230; the women in our family are so strong.\u00a0 Sarah, Shaina and Sophie, you\u00a0are named in her honor&#8230; but each of you carry part of Mommie Soph in you.
